Philosophy Statement:
The Westminster Schools adheres to the philosophy that the school counseling program is an essential and integral part of the overall education process. The comprehensive program is built on the assumption that certain educational and personal/social objectives are attainable when school counseling for all students is provided.

School counseling is most effective and supportive of the Westminster Community when coordinated with other educators.  Growth and learning are developmental; therefore, school counseling curriculum must be developmental and sequential across all divisions.

Mission Statement:
The Westminster School’s Counseling Program seeks to uphold the school’s philosophy and mission in developing the whole person for college and for life. The Comprehensive School Counseling Program is committed to individual uniqueness, community, and the maximum development of human potential. Our mission as school counselors is to provide a comprehensive and sequential guidance program across all divisions that will assist all students in acquiring the personal/social and educational skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to become effective students, responsible citizens, and lifelong learners as they serve and lead in a changing world.

Counseling Belief Statement:
The school counselors believe all students:

  • have dignity and worth
  • should have access to a school counselor to identify and discuss personal/social/academic concerns
  • should have access to programming that enhances their educational, career, personal/social development

 And that all counselors:

  • abide by professional ethics, guidelines, and standards of the American School Counselor Association
  • participate in ongoing professional development and training to maintain a quality school counseling program
  • consult and collaborate with fellow counselors and mental health professionals

And that the school counseling program:

  • shall strive to be comprehensive, sequential, and developmentally appropriate across divisions
  • shall serve students, families, faculty, and the larger Westminster community
  • considers the individual uniqueness of our students and families in implementation and planning of the school counseling program
  • should be consistent with expected developmental stages of learning
  • shall impart specific skills and learning opportunities in a proactive and preventive manner
  • shall provide support in crisis management situations
  • shall be planned and coordinated by the counseling department
  • shall be managed by master’s level Professional Counselors
  • shall be guided by the professional mandates, guidelines, and ethics proposed by the National and State Counselor Associations
